The Gamemaker's Father is a read unlike any other. John Jonelis masterfully takes you backward to the "then" of life as it was lived in the rugged, backwoods days of the 18th century, and then forward to the "now" of marriage, family and work struggles that we all face. You seesaw backward and forward, and you don't want to leave either place because the story always has you on the brink. I look forward to more from Jonelis' insightful pen!
I finished reading this book last week--I loved it! I couldn't put it down. I cried in at least two parts and felt so drawn to the characters and just, well, sucked in! John Jonelis has intermingled life, love, marriage, relationships, family, faith and so much more like a master weaver of an exquisite tapestry. I can't wait to read his next novels! What are you waiting for? It's only $2.99, worth well more than that! A definite must read.
This book uses an unusual narrative device that engages a modern-day father and son in creating a story together, set in the frontier world of 1830 Wisconsin. If you enjoy mysteries with a strong family angle, you'll like this book. Also, if you want to learn how to make a birch bark canoe or work as a blacksmith, there are good instructions here.
This is a great story of a father and son and how important the bond between them can be-what they learn about themselves as they learn about each other. I was swept into the two worlds John created and his descriptions allowed me to experience what those places looked and felt like. The last half of the book, I read without stopping! I wanted the story to go on & didn't want to say "goodbye" to Zachary and Nate.
