Rifleman Dodd A Novel Of The Peninsular Campaign C S Forester 9781163134320 Books
This is a classic for all military readers, though I would caution against reading it before you have a few years under your belt. Wait until you’ve seen the liars, and the braggarts, and the shirkers that inhabit real military life. Then compare this simple unassuming and yet amazingly steadfast devotion to duty from one whom it should not be expected of.This was not an officer, who could know that he was supporting a grand strategy, not even an NCO who had decades of leadership to hone his sense of duty. This was a rifleman, whose only thoughts were of re-joining his mates in the regiment. All his heroic deeds were done for no other reason than they were right and expected.
Worthy of lengthy discussion at OCS and officer continuing education.

Rifleman Dodd A Novel Of The Peninsular Campaign C S Forester 9781163134320 Books Reviews
This book can be summed up in one word Duty.
The story is one of a soldier who finds himself lost and alone, but carries on, attempting to rejoin his unit while causing the enemy as much trouble as he can along the way. He does so for no reason better than because it is his duty.
While this book has an obvious military theme, I think the underlying meaning is one that needs to be promoted more in today's society. Though Dodd has every reason to give up and succumb to a difficult situation, he perseveres. He "sucks it up" and does what needs to be done- no excuses.
So many today turn away from challenges- in their careers, in their marriages, and so on. They attempt to justify and rationalise, but so rarely do they suck it up. I firmly believe that if more people had the self discipline to carry on- without complaint or contempt, without promise of reward, the world would be a better place.
I enjoyed this read. It follows a rifleman cut off from his unit in the days when stopping at a store for supplies was a rare treat.
Written in a style that allows Forester to introduce multiple characters and how their paths cross. I prefer his Hornblower character, but he had several volumes in which to fully develop that character. I enjoyed the book and the description of the soldiers who fought in this campaign. I actually read this one while waiting for the next two volumes of the Hornblower series. Worth your time.
For years I have heard of this book, but it was unavailable. It is a worthy addition to your library.
This work is notable from three points of view. First, as others have noted it is a military story about partisan warfare, spirit and dedication. Dodd is a model soldier, a wonderful example.
Next, it is a painless primer on the Peninsular War. What was it like? Not too nice. (Sharps's Gold also deals with this war.)
Finally, it is a standalone book by Forester, the writer of the Hornblower series. Those of us who love Hornblower learn more about the author and the art of writing by seeing such a different work.
A good book for the military professional. An excellent thriller for teenaged boys. An interesting sidelight for the Hornblower fan.
The story lacks the intricate complexity and nuanced realism of the Hornblower series. A much less complex central character, and not nearly as engaging a story. A not so flattering portrayal of the Napoleonic French army.
Clearly one can see the roots of Sharpe here and I believe Bernard Cornwell, another favorite author has acknowledged this fact. Forester was never afraid to have an edge and present reality in his novels and this is no exception. It is gritty in spots. Some say this particular rifleman's bravery and skill in evading the enemy veer into hyperbole, but we see a little of Dodd in real life warriors like Alvin York, the Marines who stood fast at Belleau Wood, Audie Murphy, and the whole 101st Airborne throughout it's glorious history (not to short any other army unit but if you had to pick just one), who have epitomized the development of modern infantry and what giving them education in tactics and allowing them to think for themselves can accomplish. A tradition that started with Wellington's Greencoats and continues in our Special Operations men today.
A classic historical novella about the Napoleonic Wars (from an English point of view) by CS Forester, the author of the Hornblower series. I've read it again over and over again (about once every 5-10 years, but I'm an old guy and that adds up). I love it each time.
